£500 support payment for unpaid carers

Registration is open, please check the list at the end of the post for your local authority’s link to the application form.

The Welsh Government has published the guidance on how the £500 support payment for unpaid carers will roll out.

To recap, it is a one-off £500 payment available for unpaid carers receiving Carers Allowance on 31 March 2022.

Eligible unpaid carers can claim the payment from their local council. Each Local Authority will also have its own guidance pages, including a link to its registration form and details on how to register offline.

These should all be available by May 16 when registration opens.

The registration process will open from 9 am 16 May 2022.

The registration process will close at 5 pm 15 July. You must submit your registration form before then.

Who can apply?

You will be eligible for the payment if:

  • you were receiving Carers Allowance on 31 March 2022
  • your application for Carers Allowance is in progress and your claim is backdated to 31 March 2022
  • you live in Wales

Will the payment affect other benefits?

The payment will not impact any benefits you may be receiving.

The payment will not:

  • be taxable
  • be subject to National Insurance contributions
  • be included as part of income when calculating entitlement for tax credits

Beware of scammers

Be aware of fraudsters asking for your bank details. We have been made aware of a scam involving cold calling, targeting families and asking for bank details using the £500 payment as the excuse. Please remember, that only your local council is responsible for making these payments.
